Celebrating Songkran: The Joyful Water Festival of Thai New Year
Every year on April 13th, 14th, and 15th, the Thai New Year, Songkran, is celebrated with water festivals. (In some regions, the dates may vary slightly.) Here, we introduce famous locations for the water festival throughout Thailand.
Combining these with the previously mentioned spots, here is the updated list:
Known as one of the best places to celebrate Songkran, Chiang Mai features a large-scale celebration with parades, cultural performances, and extensive water fights. The moat area around the old city becomes the epicenter of the festivities.
Ayutthaya
The ancient city of Ayutthaya offers a unique Songkran experience, blending water fights with the backdrop of historical ruins and temples. Elephants often join the fun, spraying water on the crowds.
Phuket
Patong Beach in Phuket becomes a lively hub for Songkran celebrations. The beachfront road turns into a bustling party zone with water fights, music, and beach activities.
Pattaya
Pattaya’s Songkran festivities, known as Wan Lai, extend beyond the official dates, sometimes lasting over a week. Beach Road becomes the main area for water battles, concerts, and traditional ceremonies.
Khon Kaen
In the northeastern region of Isaan, Khon Kaen is famous for its grand Songkran festival. The city hosts a large parade, beauty contests, traditional dances, and, of course, plenty of water fights.
Hua Hin
Hua Hin offers a more relaxed Songkran celebration, with water activities along the beachfront and a family-friendly atmosphere. The town also organizes traditional Thai cultural events and ceremonies.
Sukhothai
Celebrating Songkran in the historical park of Sukhothai adds a cultural and historical dimension to the water festivities. The ancient ruins provide a picturesque setting for the celebrations.
Silom Road, Bangkok
Silom Road is one of the most vibrant and chaotic places to celebrate Songkran in Bangkok. The entire length of the road is packed with revelers, and water fights are intense. Expect to be soaked from head to toe while enjoying the street party atmosphere.
RCA (Royal City Avenue), Bangkok
RCA is known for its nightlife and clubbing scene, and during Songkran, it transforms into a huge water party zone. The clubs and bars along RCA organize special events, DJ performances, and foam parties, making it a popular spot for younger crowds looking for a lively celebration.
Khao San Road, Bangkok
Although not outside Bangkok, Khao San Road is a must-mention. This popular backpacker street becomes a major hotspot for wild water fights and street parties during Songkran.
Each of these locations offers a unique way to experience the joyous and refreshing spirit of the Songkran festival.
