Why You Need to Be Careful of Stray Dogs in Thailand

Tips

The One Crucial Reason to Beware of Stray Dogs in Thailand

When you think of Thailand, you might envision its stunning beaches, vibrant street markets, and rich cultural heritage. However, there’s a less idyllic reality that travelers and residents alike need to be aware of: the danger posed by stray dogs. Here’s the one shocking reason you must be cautious: every year, one million people in Thailand are bitten by dogs.

Reports indicate that approximately one million individuals suffer from dog bites annually in Thailand. While the accuracy of this number can be debated, personal experiences and anecdotes underscore the severity of the issue. In my circle alone, I know several people who have been bitten.

Real-Life Horror Stories

Consider the case of a household maid who was brutally attacked by a pet dog, resulting in crushed wrists and ankles. Another tragic incident involved a six-year-old girl from my neighborhood who fell off her bicycle and was immediately bitten on the head and arm. She had to undergo surgery with dozens of stitches to mend the wounds.

The Stray Dog Menace in Bangkok and Beyond

Even in Bangkok, stray dogs are a common sight in alleyways. In my personal experience, I’ve been surrounded by packs of 5-6 dogs in Bangkok and even larger groups in rural areas. So, what should you do if you find yourself encircled by stray dogs? The key is to avoid eye contact & calmly walk past them.

Do Not:

Make eye contact. It can provoke the dogs.
Run. Running not only triggers a chase but also increases the likelihood of being bitten.

Precautionary Measures

To stay safe, consider the following tips:

Avoid walking through alleyways, especially alone.
Stay away from dark, deserted streets at night when stray dogs are more active due to cooler temperatures.
Refrain from touching stray dogs, no matter how friendly they seem. They often live in unsanitary conditions, which poses health risks, especially for children.

Immediate Action if Bitten

If you are bitten by a stray dog, seek medical attention immediately and get a rabies shot. Prompt action is crucial for preventing serious health complications.

By staying informed and cautious, you can enjoy all that Thailand has to offer while staying safe from the hidden dangers of stray dogs.
